More on Wright and Obama

Wright is clearly something "wrong" with America.  An idea somehow spread maybe 30 to 40 years ago that "whites" are somehow "to blame" for the plight of blacks in America.  Clearly, in many parts of America this is very mainstream thinking -- that "it" is the fault of "whites."  I remember this happening to a friend of mine about 30 years ago who was beaten up by a bunch of black kids because they "saw Roots."  Well, actually if they saw roots they would have noticed that (1) blacks sold blacks into slavery and (2) blacks often have "white" ancestors as well as black ones.

Of course, Wright ignores the obvious.  Pastor Wright where did you get your skin tone?  The guy has lighter skin than Obama -- who is half white.  Wright's skin tone is lighter than some whites.  Does Wright have white slaveholding ancestors like Obama does?  Is this what makes him so mad?  Is he like Ted Haggard or Jimmy Swaggart -- someone who might act out because of guilts they possess?

His belief that "only blacks are corrected" regarding use of English is patently false (hey, what happened to the kids in Louisiana who spoke French in class in the 1940s -- a whipping -- not just a "correction").  I cannot totally call Wright a racist because I more than suspect that he is at least 50% European ancestry.  So, the better term would be a self-hating European American -- as is Obama.

Reverand Wright's latest musings

Reverand Wrights latest comments show just how ignorant he is.  Only blacks are corrected with use of English?  This guy has no knowledge of languages.

Most "whites" do not come from an English language background.  Even thoose who do -- like a Cockney Londoner -- will be corrected for not speaking English correctly.

Was Kennedy not speaking correctly?  No, not strictly speaking -- a New England accent actually might be a more proper way of speaking English -- if the goal is to "sound English."

Since Kennedy was of Irish heritage, as am I, I will give a simple example.  The Irish language has no words for "yes" or "no" which is why some of us do not answer questions with "yes" or "no."  We might instead say "I would" or "I would not" or "I am" or "I am not."  I have been told to just "answer yes or no" at times -- but I think it is a less precise way of answering questions and engaging in dialogue.  So, that is not an example of a perceived problem.

The Irish helped (some would say negatively) mold what is considered "poor pronunciation" and is corrected all the time.  The best example of this is the Irish language has no "th" sound.  So, someone many Irish will say "dat is sometin, I will tink about dat."  Which, of course, would be corrected in schoolrooms and classes no matter what the person speaking it looks like.

Irish people will also say "me" instead of "my" -- again that will be corrected.  Border Scots also have issues -- their native tougue of Scots (or Lalans or Ullans) is similar to English -- but is still quite different (I am not talking about Gaelic Scots who speak a language similar to the Irish Gaelic language as a native toungue).  Indeed, a Scottish boy was whipped in school in the 1970s for saying "Ah dinna ken" (which means "I don't know).

There is a Clarence Thomas connection here though.  The reason he does not speak a lot -- according to him -- is that he was brought up speaking Gullah -- which is a language that still retains many African words (neither Obama or his dad ever had the experience in speaking any of the words that slaves spoke coming off the ships -- but Justice Thomas does).  So, he became selfconscious about speaking as he grew up.

the real Obama

From a review of Obama's biological background, we can see who Obama really is.  On the one hand, he is very smart.  I give him credit for this because he became Editor of Harvard's law review.  It is not clear whether or not he was admitted to Harvard as an affirmative action (lesser) candidate.  I would submit that Clarence Thomas' with honors degree from Holy Cross (a university certainly within the top 10%) should make people think that maybe he deserved to get in to Yale law school (but as Thomas himself says, affirmative action tarnished his Yale degree).  Obama -- being editor of Harvard's law review -- shows that he has an incredible ability with people.  Though Harvard is a liberal institution, nobody who is really underserving could become Editor of the Law Review.

Obama's ability with people makes him very dangerous.  For whatever reason, at a very young age he gravitated towards extreme leftists as his mentors.  He chose many of those people AFTER he went to Harvard (Wright and Ayers).  His San Francisco statement about "bitter" America shows who he really is -- a very cunning leftist elitist.

I have said this countless times on this blog, but it bears repeating.  It might make sense for someone with Clarence Thomas' background to gravitate in the direction of a Jeremiah Wright (just like I understand why Robeson went in the Communist direction).  Civil Rights in Thomas' home state of Georgia was problematic (at least) until Thomas was about 30 years old.  I could understand how someone might become a radical if they were exposed to segregated accomodations until they were in their 20s.  Obama is just so totally different than this.

Because of basic prejudice (and historical ignorance) Obama gets linked with black Americans.  It really is no different than calling all East Asians "Chinese" -- people do it -- but than is borne of ignorance.  After all, someone from Japan, Vietnam or the Philappines would rightfully be somewhat offended by being simply called "Chinese."

First, Obama is biracial -- which people from Franco Harris to Tiger Woods for years have been emphasising this point when they are simply called "black."

More importantly, his father was Kenyan.  The people of Kenya have a real history -- a good example of this unique aspect of them is they are probably the best long distant runners in world history.  Indeed, athletic history tells us that West Africans have been great sprinters -- East Africans (particularly Kenyans) are great at running long distances.  The point with that stark difference is that they are not the same thing -- nor is Japan the same thing as Vietnam -- different people with different cultures.

Kenyans do not even really look like West Africans -- Does someone from Turkey look the same as a Swede?  Turks and Swedes are "white" from a very general race example as all Sub-Saharan Africans are black -- but they are different in many ways.

So, while Americans may generally be ignorant to history Obama is certainly not.  He knows that his fathers "people" were not slaves in America and even dealt with Jim Crow issues.  He also knows that not only was his mom white, but two separate families in her background owned slaves.

So, given this background why gravitate towards a Jeremiah Wright?  It is really the same reason that you might gravitate towards a white radical like Bill Ayers -- an attraction to American radicals.  Obama is smart enough to know how ignorant most people are -- so he knew that Wright could benefit him with a type of "street cred."  The funny thing is that even though Obama is a smart guy he still is not any better at doing a "black voice" than a comedian like Howard Stern.  Of course, Obama would not naturally have any reason for "talking black" given that he grew up with no black American close influences.  If a white person in politics tried doing this for black audiances this would be attacked.

Anyway, we also see in Obama's choice for a wife more about his calculated choices.  It would be a bit of a culture shock for anyone to marry someone with a different religious and/or racial background.  He chose a black radical -- no surprise from the standpoint of him being calculated -- but it is surprising for someone with his actual background.  Though Hawaii has few blacks -- many people are multiracial  so being part white and part Kenyan would really not be that big a deal for Hawaii (lots of Somoans live in Hawaii -- they are as "black" as Obama).

His wife being proud for the first time (very sad really) with her husband -- wasn't she a little bit proud with Mosely Braun's election to the senate (first and only black woman)?  Remember, this is the same state Obama is from (Illinois) -- and she ALSO ran for POTS (though she did not do too well in primaries).  Also, this crazy attitude that as a black man Obama could get shot going to the gas station -- what is up with that?  Why would something like that happen to him (as opposed to someone white)?  It is true that blacks do sometimes get hassled by the police (and it is a legitimate gripe that people have) -- but just getting shot for being black?  What is she talking about?  Certainly, there is a documented high amount of black on white, and black on black crimes, but not random black killings due to being black.

Though Obama is much more intelligent and personable than the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of this world his view points are every bit (if not more) as radical.

The quick summary for me (1) Ayers, (2) Wright, (3) Bitter, (4) Grandma, (5) typical white person, (6) Candidate questionaire in 1996 -- outlaw handguns (7)  his wife.  The only one of these things that he could ever explain away to me would be #6 -- he could tell me it was a political necessity based upon the people in the district to take such a position (and he would be maybe telling the trutth).  Any of these other things are totally inexcusable.

I do not have a lot of confidence in America because I can tell how popular Obama is with many segments of society (including my own parents).  People really appear not to care a whole lot about these things.

Will these things prevent Obama from winning West Virginia, Arkasas and Tennessee in the general election?  I don't know.  Could Obama win a state with a high number of black Americans because so many will vote because he is on the ticket -- maybe that could happen -- but maybe he would have a shot of winning Lousiana or Georgia states that sometimes go Democratic that have 25%+  of their electorate who are black.

I think Hillary Clinton would maybe have been a better candidate to win those low percent black rural states like Iowa or West Virginia -- but I do not really know how it will impact things.

I would consider myself pretty conservative -- but given the choice of many conservative policies that have been adopted over the past 10 years versus liberatarian and even liberal positions -- I have voted and supported many Democrats (like Kerry and Jim Webb).  There is no way I could support an Obama -- but I am not the kind of voter people have to worry about.

The suburbs like Obama, blacks really like Obama, urban areas really like Obama, young people like him -- winning these groups can get you elected president without worrying about losing the other areas.  Obama also have a lot more money than McCain -- and probably will have a lot more than him in the fall -- making things potentially pretty tough.

If McCain and Obama have close to equal amount of money come September -- I would give McCain the edge.  As it is, I do not think that this will happen.

In 2008, I think that it is likely that the Red State/Blue State dynamic might play out close to where things played out in 2000 and 2004 (where things were almost the same).  So, that makes the swing states that much more important.

Obama Ayers connection

Maybe Pastor Wright is just a loud mouth.  I think he is kind of a scary character for a preacher -- but I don't think he is violent.  This Obama connection with Bill Ayers is very scary.  Ayers had one of his first ever fundraisers at his house.  On 9/11/01 Ayers quoted in the NYT as regreting that he did not do more bombing?  Being a "crazy uncle" type bigot (who lives in an almost all white very very exclusive neighborhood) is one thing -- a bomber?

Paul Robeson and racism

Paul Robeson provides us with a good example of why people should be judged on merits rather than be prejudged based upon an irrelevant trait.  I do not think it is a cooincidence that Robeson became a hard core Stalinist (winning the Stalin award and not only defending 1930s -50s Soviet Activities).  Robeson was an incredibly talented figure -- like a Benjamin Franklin.  Society and the United States likely would have benefitted more from his talents had he developed in an era where merits were championed.

The Cliff notes version of Robeson is -- Phi Beta Kappa scholar, All American Athlete, Graduate of a top 10 law school (Columbia) lawyer, linquist (spoke like 10+ languages), historian, professional athlete, actor and singer and did these things between 1920 and 1940 -- during an era where hard core discrimination existed.  After being hired as a lawyer, the secretary who worked for his firm refused to do any dictation for him (a basic necessity at the time) because of his skin color -- so he, understandably, quit that job.  I am sure he went through countless hardships -- he did not fit the stereotype of an uneducated "typical black person" as for the time Obama might say.  But, he dealt with all of the presumptions and assumptions that society's unfair judgment on a race of people had to deal with.  It would have been much easier to just be a black menial worker -- who would not dissapoint those who judge purely based upon irrational considerations -- yet he accomplished so much during an era of great hardship.

Clarence Thomas stated that his Yale law school degree was worthless because of another set of assumptions.  People now naturally assume that he only got into Yale because of his skin color.  Yet it is not as simple as that.  Thomas went to a top notch college -- Holy Cross and graduated Cxm Laude -- with honors.  I am not convinced, based upon those facts, that the reason he got into Yale was because of his skin color.  While he did not graduate from Harvard (which is a better school than Holy Cross) and he did not graduate with highest honors (Summa Cxm Laude) -- but those aspects are a necessity to get into Yale lawschool.  Plenty of people who get into Yale law school -- who are white -- went to colleges that are not better than Holy Cross.  Plenty of people who get into Yale law school "only" graduate with honors.

The facts about Thomas and Robeson are the point -- you should not judge based upon and irrelevent considerations (be it eye color, hair color, skin color).

[This post got "flagged" for "inappriate language" because I used the Latin work for "with" -- which is relevant when you say "with honors" in the means that most colleges describe.  Townhall should at least make a fix when using Laude as the next word.]

A history lesson: the struggles of Obama versus those of Clarence Thomas

Fate has provided us with two examples of people American society has labeled as "black" who have -- to put it mildly -- very dissimilar ideologies as well as family histories.

Clarence Thomas was born 6 years prior to Brown v. Board of Education in Georgia.  He lived through the deep South during the 1950s and 1960s.  His family were the descendents of slaves and spoke Gullah -- a kind of hybrid language of the languages of African slaves and English.

Barack Obama is the descendent a mother who, amongst her ancestors, is the descendent of two different slave holding families and a Kenyan -- who was recruited to go to college in the United States.  Kenya, while in Africa, is not where slaves in America are from.  He was born in Hawaii in 1961 -- and to my knowledge never set foot in the deep south during the civil rights era.

Oh, yeah -- but most important -- Clarence Thomas is an Uncle Tom -- and Obama is audacious.

My white history

Since it is becoming popular to group all "whites" together -- since people seem to think all of us "whites" are the same -- it has helped spark some interest in my own "white" history with the advantages that has given me.

It seems, though by fate of color I am to blame for segregation and slavery, that I cannot find a connection in my family to either.  My maternal grandparents were first generation Americans who settled in Massachusettes and New York.  Much of my maternal ancestors worked as servants, longshoremen and caretakers.  They came from Mayo, Sligo and Longford Counties in Ireland -- fortunate enough to have parents who lived through An Gorta Mor under circumstances dire poverty.  Most were farmers, some spoke Irish still.  But, they were fortunate enough to be able to read and write though not all owned any property.

Most of my patneral grandmother's family came to America from Ireland during An Gorta Mor -- in the 1840s and the aftermath in the 1850s.  About half paternal grandfather's family came to America from Ireland during the general timeframe of the 1840s and 1850s from Ireland -- though Protestants -- they were what was called religious dissenters -- so they were not members of the established Protestant church.  One paternal ancestor came to America during the Civil War era and, like all whites who had no money, was drafted into service along with his brother for the Union.  All of these people settled in the north -- most in New York.

From about the 12th century onwards, Ireland had a very tough history with England.  The history was particularly difficult during Cromwell's reign during which most Irish were killed or put into slavery and during the 19th century during An Gorta Mor.

Irish people -- but not all "white" people -- came to America and were labeled being called drunkards, violent and hot tempered.  Two of those traits are probably bad news to deal with -- if they are true.

So, if you assume I or anyone with a similar background to me has some of these bad "Irish" traits, it may not be a good idea to suggest that my ancestors were responsible for things they were not.  In fact, it might be interpreted as pi##ing on the graves of people who had severe hardships to overcome.

public speeches

In almost 40 years, I suppose I have seen lots of different people speak in a public forum -- be it at a political rally, church or school gathering.  On some occassions, I have not agreed with what the speaker said -- even some sermons in my own religion.  But, I must admit I do not think I have ever seen anything -- in person -- like Jeremiah Wright.  I have been to black churches before, and different kinds of charasmatic churches, but I cannot say that I ever saw anyone making a speach like the ones that have been publicized.

Clinton, before he was president, had some connection to radicals while in college -- but he really had not had any recent (as of the early 1990s) experience that I know of.

What would a president who, not only would accept the kind of message of Jeremiah Wright, but would endorse it by 20 years of church attendance mean for America.  What kind of judgment would such a president use?  In the past, liberal politicians have been accused of tolerating political correctness -- and tolerating different standards for different racial groups -- but no national politician has been a member of such a radical movement.  Does Obama really think that the CIA invested AIDS to kill off people of color?  I would think that the CIA could come up with a more deadly disease than AIDS if it really wanted to kill people -- don't we have all sorts of deadly biological weapons right now in our possession?  Why would the CIA not just use such a weapon if it wanted to wipe people out?

It says a lot that Obama calls Jeremiah Wright someone as important as his grandmother -- or actually took care of him as a child -- helped raise him.  To assume such an important position -- as important as a parent really -- means that Jeremiah Wright is obviously someone very, very close to Obama.  Would anybody reading this befriend someone who acted like Jeremiah Wright -- for at least the reason -- even if you really liked the guy -- that he might publically embarrass you?  You cannot chose your family -- you can choose your friends.

So, Obama's closest mentors are (1) Bill Ayers -- a man who was an American Terrorist -- who set bombs up in America, and (2)  Jeremiah Wright.  What would someone who has access to the NSA/CIA/FBI records and nuclear technology potentially do -- either purposely or unwittingly -- with that information?  Would I be permitted to write this blog -- or would I be re-educated?

Why would someone -- who is obviously intelligent -- associate with these people?  The fact that he seems personable and he apparently got along with some Republicans in the Illinois Senate is actually a bad thing since apparently he is not open about his true feelings -- otherwise he would not be so close with Ayers and Wright -- and those people are much closer to him than Republicans he "got along with" in Illinois -- or even his grandmother.

For the sake of argument, lets agree that it would be an important milestone to have a black American President.  If that is the case, wouldn't it be more of a milestone to have someone from black American roots, than someone with 2 slaveholders and connections to a part of Africa that no slaves came to America from?  Wouldn't it be better to have someone who could legitimately say -- I grew up in the segregated south, my parents couldn't read, and I became President.  There are legitimate black politicians who have real stories like that one.  Obama's father was an important man who was so important that America recruited him to attend school here.

I literally here almost nobody state any of the things I state on this blog -- and these are not observations that take someone with a genious IQ to make.

The fact that Americans are very close to electing someone with such openly bizarre atributes -- who feels I need to identify with a group he is actually not a part of -- is scary to me.  If I had white slaveholding ancestors I probably would not be very comfortable associating with someone who constantly reminded me of how slavery was so bad.  If I were half German, I probably would not want to be constantly reminded of World War II atrocities.

The fact that Obama is not a fringe candidate -- like a Lyndon LaRouche or a David Duke -- and no matter what will probably be at least a one term President in the future (since he is only 46) means that America is really done for.

Obama and the Cold War

Obama's choice of associates during the 1980s should help illustrate why he is the wrong choice for America.  As some people who are younger are not aware, by the 1980s we had been at war against communism for over 30s years.  The Soviet Union had ICBMs and nuclear submarines with weapons targeting every major city and every military target in America.  Literally, for decades we were in a position where the wrong mix of U.S. -- Soviet leaders could have caused the most horrific damage to human society in history.

During the 1980s, there was a great deal of debate as to whether American cold warriors (both Republicans and Democrats) were right about communism and the Soviet Union.  Stalin's atrocities -- while known on a certain level -- were not conclusively proven.  Left wing educators and students would assert, when such claims about communism were made, that these were lies or exaggerations.  Then, they would point out things that Americans did wrong -- and try to say (at best) we are both bad, or (at worst) the Soviet Union was "better."  In 1984, I remember I attended a student function where a student leader stated "the Soviet Union is a peaceful democracy."  Nevertheless, my instincts -- and the instincts of those who supported Reagan -- were right.

Obama, in his biography, discusses that those leftist students and professors were who he associated with.  Indeed, one of his mentors is a former American terrorist (Bill Ayers) who planted bombs with his terrorist organizations.

Clearly, people like Ayers and Obama, after the KGB files were opened in the 1990s -- did not make a self-examination and think "maybe I had it wrong."  Otherwise, it would have been a profound regret of Obama's and he no longer would be associating with Ayers.

Would a Republican who had an abortion clinic bomber as a mentor and supporter (who hosted his first political fundraiser at his house) have any chance whatsoever of getting the Republican nomination?  With mentors like Ayers and Wright, what does that say for a potential president?

two wrongs = a right

It is clear that most of humanity sincerely believes that two wrongs equals a right -- no matter how much you try to convince them otherwise.  Most recently, I have been trying to convince people from the angle that it is good for them and the people they care about.  Sure, you could use some of the examples Jesus gives in the gospels -- but I think people generally are more motivated by self interest than salvation (anyway, can I really prove to anyone what path -- if any -- will get them this?).

So, here it goes.  It was wrong for the French to exact revenge against the Germans after World War I.  Ulimately, it was against their self intererest because that economic burden and the humiliation associated with those armistace terms helped get Hitler into power.  That is, Hitler only took power with about 35% of the popular vote -- his viewpoints would not be popular -- and they would not actually have really even existed -- had World War I ended with more reasonable terms for the Germans.  So, thought those terms may have temporarily been good for the French -- it got them money -- it made them satisfy to punish an enemy who had recently killed many of their soldiers and occupied parts of their land -- it was in the whole bad for them since about 20 years later this caused them to be defeated by the Germans.  To this day, the French are humiliated by what happened -- along with the Vichy French.

The Germans, while brutal against those they initially defeated in World War II in the East -- ended up losing about 1/3 of their Eastern territory and millions of civilian lives because of what happened during World War II.

Certainly, you do not always reap what you sow.  Stalin -- among the most brutal leaders in history -- never paid a price for what he did.  The reason not to be unfair towards others is that you risk that reciprical poor treatment.

So, while it might feel good to humiliate someone while you can -- unless you can guarantee his children won't go after your children you might instead want to be fair to people.

The things people in power did and said -- which may have been politically expedient at the time -- could be embarrassing in the future.  Was it good for Joseph P. Kennedy to say what he said while Ambassador to Great Britain?  How about the New York Times reporter who said glowing things about the Soviet Union in the 1930s?

So, Mr. Obama -- and anyone else -- it might be a good idea to try not to be bigoted.  At least because you do not want to embarrass your children -- or what happens if a network picks up my idea -- to have Archie Obama making comical remarks about racial groups.  Speaking of All in the Family -- one of my favorite episodes was the one where Mike (Meathead) tries to convince Archie that he is Jewish -- and succeeds in convincing Edith (dingbat) who says "Archie I didn't know you was Jewish."  Mike does this because Archie's parents were named David and Sarah -- Old Testament names -- I forget what the motivation for Mike's doing this was (beyond pure humor) -- but it was quite funny.

No matter what -- Obama's grandma comments will be infamous as long as we have a human history -- this probably will cause his grandchildren embarrassment.

8 years of lost opportunities

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the Bush administration is the fact that we have gone nowhere on the war against political correctness.  Bush squandered all of his political capital on a misplanned and costly war in Iraq.  Today, if anything, political correctness is stronger than ever.  Two prime examples of this are the lack of impact of Obama bigoted recent comments and the fact that the Duke lacrosse case occurred.  Nobody -- I mean nobody -- seems to care about actual facts.  The problem is the Republicans have become so used to distortions on Iraq, they are basically immune from the Democrats distortions with people like Obama and Mike Nifong.

For probably 20 years, it has been completely acceptable to make outright lies up about "white" people and bigoted comments -- but it is impossible to attack things like political correctness without seriously risking your career.  20 years ago, I (and most whites) were aware of (1) when their family came from Europe, (2) where they came from in Europe, (3) where they settled.  For many of us "white" people, we knew neither us nor our family had any connection to slavery or Jim Crow.  While we condemned racism against blacks, we never blamed ourselves.  Many blacks, like Obama are aware of their "white" ancestry -- and are aware that they actually had white slave holders as ancestors.

Can anyone explain to me how Obama or Jeremiah Wright can guilt me -- or most white Americans into any feeling bad about ourselves for slavery?  If I had Obama's ancestry, I certainly would feel a little bit of a twinge about having two separate slaveholding ancestors -- especially since he is also considered black.  I guess this might be the root of some of his problems.  But, there again, do we really want someone with an identity problem as president.

Unlike many black Americans, Clarence Thomas perhaps has no white ancestry.  He came from a very unusual black community the Gullah people who still speak a language with many African words.  He grew up dirt poor -- in the segregated South -- yet he is an uncle Tom??  Aren't we supposed to give credit for people overcoming obsticles.  Obama's father was a scholar who attended, among other institutions, Harvard.  While he may have had collateral impact from petty racism that still exists on some level is there any evidence that he even was in the deep south during the 1960s?

typical white person

How is America at a point today where someone who has such openly inaccurate beliefs about large segments of America has a real chance to be president?  If America was a viable democracy any of these three things would torpedo a presidential candidacy:  (1) Jeremiah Wright; (2) gun and religion loving bitter people; (3) typical white people.  These clearly only have had a minimal impact on Obama's candidacy.

I find it very strange that someone who graduated from Columbia and Harvard would think there was something called a typical white person.  Starting from the obvious, whites are a majority of the people in America -- and they come from very diverse countries with different languages, histories, cultures.  Maybe because of the way Obama looks -- because he is not considered a white person -- he has an inaccurate view of what "typical" whites are like.

Anyway, since I am a "typical white" -- or at least I am accepted as "white" -- I can tell anyone of any other background that whites - when we are together and nobody but whites are around -- have a myriad of interests and viewpoints.  I have known whites who were bigoted, who were not bigoted, who had strange mixes of beliefs -- anyway the best way to look at it is to say that you cannot generalize.

Obama's candidacy is very dangerous.  Perhaps I am naive -- but I do not think many blacks really have the same viewpoints that he has.  I think that it is clear that most blacks, most whites, and most people are disinterested in facts -- and will vote with very strange motivations.

The consequence of Obama's candidacy should be that the Democratic party should be permanently damaged -- mainly because they have not universally condemned his recent remarks.

Remember -- when David Duke was the Republican candidate for governor of Louisianna the entire national Republican Party did everything it can to distance itself from Duke -- even endorsing his oponent who was notoriously corrupt (and I think is still in prison).

While history will not be kind to this era -- nor will it be kind to political correctness -- it does us today little good.

Archie Obama

I want to be president because America needs to be healed.  America is a diverse place and I want to be president of all America.

From the mountains of West Virginia, where the Redneck has sex with his sister, to the streets of Harlem, where the black does rap music and smokes crack, to people as diverse as the American Indian -- who smokes his peace pipe, takes peyote, and lives in a tepee.  We come from many backgrounds and peoples -- from the garlic nosed Italian who puts olive oil in his hair, to the Irishman who gets drunk everyday, to the Indian dot-head who likes his curry.

Managing the McCain Campaign

McCain has a real chance at winning.  However, he cannot win without distinguishing himself from Bush.  If Bush were running again -- I think it is pretty safe that he just would not win.  In 2000, Bush was the first president in over 100 years who did not get the most votes who became president (all and all, I do think Bush v. Gore was the right decision -- had Gore wanted revoting in each Florida County, he would have had some credibility -- but just choosing the ones where he had an advantage was disingenuous).  Kerry v. Bush was very close again -- but we were "closer" to being in the middle of a war then (by now, the Iraq war is in a very different place).  Some voted for Bush just because he was in charge -- and to change things at that point -- even though some people (even right wingers) were saying things were not going well -- was risky for these people.

In 2008, there is no such situation.  All and all, due to the crisis in the dollar, the economy, the cost of Iraq, our medical insurance issues -- the Republicans have a disadvantage.  Still, McCain has a real chance of winning if he follows the right path.

Here is what he needs to do:

First, he is not Bush.  McCain possibly has the worst history with George W. Bush out of any living politician.  Though he has supported the surge -- and tried to court the religious right recently -- he may be able to go back to his earlier positions -- contrasting himself with Bush by this fall.

If I were McCain, I would say -- going to Iraq was critical -- it was a clearly rougue regime in the vicinity of where terrorism was occuring.  America, and the UN, still had a mandate over the area (after the 1991 Gulf War) things escalated after 9/11 -- so we can no longer tolerate Sadaam Hussein -- perhaps the most rogue leader in that part of the world (based upon prior WMD against his own population, prior efforts to obtain nuclear weapons, and invading Kuwait).

But, Rumsfeld and the others misplanned this war.  Rumsfeld and GW Bush lacked war experience that GHW Bush and people like Scowcroft and he had.  They entrusted neoconservative theorists rather than those (like Powell) in the administration who actually understood how a war is fought.

I cannot support the way President Bush fought the war.  He was not getting good advice from his advisors -- we wasted opportunities -- it has cost more than it needed to because we did not go in with the necessary force to begin with -- and we failed to plan for the peace.  I would have done things differently -- I would have used more troops, made sure Iraq was not in chaos, and preserved the good aspects of Iraq.

McCain can also say -- I think tax cuts are generally good --but some recent ones have been reckless.  Bad war planning and tax strategy has left us with more debt than we should have had.

Back in 2006, I was at a party with some fairly important people who were Republicans (by virtue of their political position) -- but neither had voted for Bush in 2000.  Both thought that McCain was a Republican they can support.

So, McCain has a chance.  But, it would be unwise for him to ignore the real conservatives (antiwar, anti-immigration, anti-guncontrol, anti-spending) as a means of getting more liberal supporters.

Manda Bala

There was a link for this video right after my last post.  Discussing how the poor in Brazil kidnap for money in Brazil -- manda bala means send a bullet.

Do we want this for our country?  Should an American who makes $100,000 per year be able to afford a full time housekeeper, gardiner, and driver?  The "market" will pay poor to do this work -- gladly -- for minimal money.

I would rather live somewhere where on $100,000 per year paying a lawn care service weekly might be a little more than I would like, perhaps paying a house keeper 2 hours a week for $40 is a good deal -- keeps the windows and floors clean -- but on $100,000 I should not be a king in charge of 4 or 5 servants who only make 2 or 3 thousand per year.  As tempting as that might seem -- and as luxorious as that might make my life seem -- it is deadly for society.

Ultimately [CONSERVATIVES BEWARE] there are plenty of Lenins, Castros, ANCs and Hugo Chavezes -- who will help the multitudes of poor.
